Mercier beats Lellouche to win EPT
Jason Mercier of Florida won his first major tournament over the weekend after defeating Antony Lellouche to take down the European Poker Tour (EPT) San Remo event.
The 21-year-old was in scintillating form at the Casino Sanremo venue in Italy and won his title after defeating a final table quicker than any other player in the history of the tour.
Mercier won €869,000 ($1.35 million), while Lellouche - who was defeated in two hands - was given €505,000 for coming second.
The American believed he could take the title after making a call against fourth-place Eric Koskas which his opponent called "the best poker play I have ever seen".
He decided Koskas was bluffing on an all-in but only had a pair of fives himself, thus making it a difficult decision.
"I felt pretty confident of winning after making a tough call against Eric. That was when I really started to believe I could win."
Mercier scored 1,920 points in Card Player's player of the year race for 2008, putting him in 14th position.
